Dexter Hebert lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, and is a people person. He loves being in community and strives to always see the best in others. He embodies this in his personal life and professional life, where he is the Executive Branch Director of the Southeast Raleigh YMCA.
Dexter is passionate about bringing the issue of racism into daily conversations and interactions. He approaches this with empathy and compassion for those who don’t know what they don’t know. He challenges others with care in order to build authentic relationships. Recognizing that race intersects everything, Dexter focuses on advancing racial equity in every area of his life to make things better for the next generations. Witnessing white people acknowledging their complicity and challenging their own people gives Dexter hope. This can create a ripple effect that leads to broader change. Though it may not happen in our lifetime, as more people get proximate to the issue of racism and understand that everyone benefits from racial equity, there is hope that we can achieve our goal of dismantling racism. The number one thing that brings Dexter joy is being in community with people around food. Cooking, and especially preparing meals for others, is therapy for Dexter. His Louisiana heritage influences his love of coming together to eat, laugh, smile, cry, and share our humanity. |
